Prof. Oral A. Ataniyazova is a leading advocate for mother and child health, reproductive health, environmental sustainability. She specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Reproductive Health and holds both a Ph.D. and a Doctor of Medical Science degree in Moscow, Russia. Prof. Ataniyazova received further training in London, Florence, Vienna and North Carolina.

Over the past 40 years, Oral Ataniyazova has dedicated herself to improving the health of mothers and children in the Aral Sea crisis region. During 24 years she was a Rector of the Karakalpakstan medical University. Prof. Ataniyazova’s research, which includes over 100 scientific publications, focuses on reproductive health, mother and child health and the environmental impacts on public health.

Since 1991 she is a founder and chairperson of NGO Center PERZENT in Karakalpakstan (Uzbekistan) and provided activities for communities in the Aral Sea crisis region.

Dr. Ataniyazova has also served as a consultant for the UNFPA (New York), the Global Fund for Women, and coordinated Uzbekistan’s WASH program. Her steadfast commitment to advancing mother and child health & environment, reproductive health and public health was recognized nationally, regionally and internationally. She was a key speaker at the international conferences (Cairo, Beijing, Kyoto, UN, London, etc.). She won the prestigious the World Goldman Environmental Prize in 2000 for her significant contributions to addressing the ecological crisis of the Aral Sea.
